Tucked just outside Barbourville, Dr. Thomas Walker State Historic Site offers visitors a rare mix of Kentucky frontier history and family-friendly outdoor recreation, with even more to explore in 2026.
The park preserves the legacy of Dr. Thomas Walker, a physician and explorer who journeyed through the Cumberland Gap in 1750 and built what is widely considered the first permanent structure in Kentucky. His expedition and journals helped open the region to settlement nearly

“ Walker is one of those characters who was incredibly influential across Kentucky’ s history,” said Park Manager Keith Bowling as the site celebrated its 275th anniversary last year.

Each site includes grills and picnic tables and is conveniently located near restroom facilities, making it easy for larger groups to spend the day— or night— together. Sites can be reserved by calling 606-546- 4400, with prices listed at $ 10 per person.

Long-standing programs remain a big part of the experience, including annual archery events, fishing opportunities and youth summer camps that draw families from across the region. Visitors are also encouraged to stop by the gift shop, where new T-shirts for 2026 are available alongside refreshments, copies of Dr. Thomas Walker’ s journal and, for campers, free firewood while supplies last.
