JAIL FUNDING

Jail overcrowding is a national problem , however , that isn ’ t the only problem facing the jail systems run by county governments . Funding for counties is also a huge issue .

Many county facilities , including the facility in Whitley County , are struggling to provide room and board to state prisoners at the rate the state is willing to pay . The Kentucky Judge-Executive Association spoke to state legislators about the issues and were granted some relief .

In 2022 , the amount of money paid to the county for housing inmates being held on state charges went from $ 31.13 a day to $ 35 a day .

“ Costs of everything are going up ,” White said . “ The increase helps but it ’ s not really a correction of the problem .”

White said a recent study showed that the actual cost to house a prisoner is around $ 46 a day .

“ We are working on legislative solutions ,” White said , adding that he is a member of the legislative committee of the Judge Executive ’ s Association which has been working on solutions for the issue for a long time . However , he ’ s also using local connections that might help not only Whitley County but the surrounding counties as well . “ We have also been working on a possible partnership with a neighboring county .”
