What ’ s Inside ?

The CMC is being built on a site along the Chippewa River in Eau Claire about 1 mile west of the UW-Eau Claire campus and about 2 miles from Interstate 94 . Facilities inside the 225,900-square-foot CMC will include :
• 104,900-square-foot Sonnentag Event Center with a main event space with four sport courts and a capacity of 5,000 ( 3,944 spectator seats and standing room for 1,056 ) for UW-Eau Claire athletics , regional athletic competitions , concerts , tradeshows , and conventions .
• Artificially turfed John and Carolyn Sonnentag Fieldhouse , an 81,300-square-foot indoor facility containing a 100-yard practice field for university athletic teams , club sports , intramurals , the community , and Mayo rehabilitation and training personnel . It is believed this facility will be among the largest indoor practice facilities in all of college football .
• Two-story , 14,200-square-foot fitness facility called Center for Health and Wellbeing .
• Blugold Athletics offices totaling 4,800 square feet .
• Mayo Clinic Health System ’ s independent clinical location
of 20,700 square feet offering sports medicine , human performance enhancement , and diagnostic imaging services .
Here are some of the ways these carbon footprint reductions were realized in the CMC ’ s building materials :
• Nucor , whose Kankakee , Illinois , plant was chosen to provide rebar , hollow structural steel , and hot-rolled structural steel , uses efficient electric arc furnaces ( not coal-fired ) and uses 97 % recycled content to produce rebar and 58 % recycled content for its hollow structural steel .
• Eau Claire-based American Materials provided low-carbon mix designs for all concrete applications at the CMC . This was achieved by using Portland-limestone cement and increased fly ash content , both of which reduce the embodied carbon of the material . Concrete production is a major source of carbon dioxide , accounting for an estimated 7 % of human-made CO2 emissions worldwide .
• County Materials Corporation concrete masonry units ( blocks ) contain 40 % pre-consumer recycled content and were manufactured just 53 miles from the CMC site .
“ Low-carbon concrete procurement is particularly important to highlight ,” said Stok ’ s life cycle assessment report for the CMC project . “ The project team discussed the importance of embodied carbon with the ready-mix supplier , who agreed to develop third-party-verified environmental product declarations for all mix designs used in the project . The supplier was able to demonstrate that all mixes reduced embodied carbon between 12-20 % relative to the
