people were claiming they provided SUE , but the quality wasn ’ t there . It just felt like we were paying more money for the same service we had before .”
Ayres then approached Tuttle about their SUE services . Because J-U-B already had a good relationship with other Ayres professionals in the Fort Collins office , he decided to bring on Ayres as a SUE subcontractor .
“ It was pretty obvious when I first met Kasey that he was very passionate about finding utilities and doing quality work ,” Tuttle said . “ From the start there was just really good communication , and the trust was already there with Ayres , so I had a good level of comfort having them on the team . Then once we got the data back from Ayres , it was clear that they did their due diligence and they just did a really good job — and for a reasonable price , too . So , for all those reasons , I continued to put them on the next job and the next , and now we haven ’ t used anybody else for SUE services for some time .”
Ayres ’ Colorado clients consistently see the value in employing SUE services during the preconstruction phase of public projects — even though it comes at a higher front-end cost , Hayes said .
“ Contractors know the costs of down times , design changes , damages , and so forth that could have occurred if not for accurate utility documentation ,” Hayes said . “ You can express the value in terms of conflicts mitigated and let them decide what they think it would have cost . And then that ’ s when they see the value .”
