COMPLEX CAMPUS PLANNING SIMPLIFIED WHEN
MULTIPLE DISCIPLINES ALIGN TO TACKLE PROJECTS
T
he planning and development of any campus –
whether it focuses on education, health care, or
industry – needs to flow smoothly much like the roads,
sidewalks, and buildings on the campus itself.
Having a single multi-discipline consulting firm handle
all aspects of planning and design brings great benefits to
campus planners and facility directors.
“Some of the reason I really like them is they do think
like a business partner rather than a vendor,” Dan Tolan,
plant engineering manager at Bush Brothers & Company,
said about his firm’s relationship with Ayres Associates.
Ayres has completed numerous projects at the bean
maker’s campus in Augusta, Wisconsin.
“They listen very well. They understand what we’re
trying to accomplish,” Tolan said. “They’ve adapted to our
style, which is to measure four times before cutting once.
I don’t think that’s their normal mind-set, but they’ve
adapted very well.”
Understanding how a campus grows is a large
component of providing high-quality engineering services,
said Disa Wahlstrand, vice president of engineering
services at Ayres. “We’re always thinking about what lies

ahead for a campus. A solid plan needs to be in place
so that a campus development or improvement fits into
everything around it.”
One of Ayres Associates’ largest campus development
projects recently was the Falcon Center for Health,
Education, and Wellness at the University of Wisconsin-
River Falls. In addition to architecture design for new
facilities, Ayres provided services from several disciplines,
including landscape architecture and civil/site, traffic, and
structural engineering.
“We were fortunate to have good design, good site
engineering, a good contractor, good weather, and good
cooperation from students and staff,” said Dale Braun,
UW-River Falls campus planner. “To have the Falcon Center
in the ground and operating is a real triumph.”
