A Look Back : Addressing an Unsafe Florida Roadway
Last December , 15-year-old Myles Farago was killed while riding his bike to school at Hudson Academy in rural Pasco County . Occurring on Kitten Trail , the incident location has no streetlights , and the roadway also has no sidewalks , flashing crossing lights , or other safety features .
Back in 2017 , a middle school student in Spring Hill convinced County officials that an intersection near her school required signalization to increase safety . Ayres partnered with the County to deliver an extremely accelerated design effort to turn what was a proposal in July into reality by the start of the school year .
Given this long-time partnership , Pasco County reached out to Ayres with a request concerning Kitten Trail : design a safer thoroughfare for all . Ayres is now in the beginning stages of design , which will include a sidewalk on the south side of the roadway , school zone markings , and new lighting . The team is

also investigating a roundabout for its traffic calming effect . The project is expected to be completed this summer with safety features in place by the beginning of the next school year .
