Poudre Canyon Native Recounts Cameron Peak Fire

If you ’ re from the Poudre Canyon area of Colorado , you likely know Sandra Lundt . Although she spends most weekdays now at her house in Fort Collins , for Lundt , the Poudre Canyon has always been her real home .

“ It ’ s in my blood ; I was born and raised there ,” Lundt said . Her parents owned the Arrowhead Lodge in the Canyon since 1946 , and she spent summers working at the resort growing up . She went to school at a one-room schoolhouse in the Canyon until eighth grade , and she continues to lead the music program at the Poudre Canyon Chapel every week to this day .
Since her parents passed away , Lundt and her sister now own the property in the Dry Creek area of Poudre Canyon , and she heads up to her home in the mountains almost every weekend .
On September 25 , 2020 , Lundt was in Fort Collins when she got news that the Cameron Peak Fire was nearing her family home , the lodge , and the chapel .
“ From Fort Collins , we could see the skies . It was horrific ,” Lundt said . She kept track of the fire location on fire maps as well as firsthand accounts from volunteer firefighters . “ The night that everything almost burned , I called my sister and said , ‘ You need to be prepared , because I think the house is gone , and the lodge , and the church .’ We prayed all night ,” she said .
The next morning , Lundt held a prayer gathering at her house in Fort Collins when she received a text from “ this angel firefighter ” who had been at her property all night .
