A Look Back : A Long Drive to a New Interchange
A new highway interchange west of Green Bay , Wisconsin , has been over 12 years in the making , and Ayres has had a hand in its transformation every step of the way .
Ayres began designing the interchange at State Highway 29 and Brown County Highway VV in 2010 for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation ( WisDOT ) with the knowledge that the plans would be put on the shelf until more funding could be secured . After the interchange design work began , WisDOT hired Ayres to design a restricted crossing U-turn ( RCUT ) intersection at Highway VV to improve safety until the full interchange could be built . It was one of the first RCUT intersections designed in the state .
Brown County received a federal grant worth nearly $ 20 million in 2018 through the U . S . Department of Transportation ’ s Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development ( BUILD ) program to revive the dormant project . Ayres staff participated in helping to secure the grant .
The federal funds are supporting an interchange with sidewalks , bicycle lanes , and roundabouts at the ramp terminals and nearby intersections . Construction began in 2021 and wraps up in fall 2022 . Ayres staff is assisting WisDOT with construction engineering services .
