Invasive insect species can wreak havoc on urban forests. Color infrared orthoimagery with tree canopy features— such as the example to the right— can help urban foresters mitigate the tree canopy damage these insects cause by establishing baseline canopy coverage and identifying trends in canopy loss over time. The imagery was captured over Madison, Wisconsin, with Ayres Associates’ RCD 30 digital mapping camera.

Beyond its usefulness for urban foresters, the high-accuracy imagery developed from the RCD 30 has a wide range of potential applications: It helps floodplain managers assess potential flood concerns and electrical engineers plan routes for transmission lines. It gives roadway engineers a more efficient way of mapping transportation features. It assists disposal service specialists in estimating landfill site volumes accurately.
