The solid waste and
recycling industry
is the fifth most
dangerous occupation
in the United States. In
Wisconsin alone there
were four solid waste
related fatalities in 2016, including
deaths involving two collection truck
crashes, one waste collector struck
by a vehicle while on a route, and a
resident who was hit by his own vehicle
at a waste/recycling drop-off site. The
national and state safety efforts aim
to reduce the industry’s occupational
hazard.
Lietz’s work has included formation
of a safety committee that looks at
these and other safety issues, raising
awareness to safety issues, and creating
best practice guides to assist solid
waste professionals in safe operations.
Manager to receive award
Janice Ash, manager
of Ayres’ Southeast
Operations Municipal
and Utilities group, is
being presented with
the 2017 Distinguished
Alumni Award from
the University of South Florida College
of Engineering on April 8. The award
recognizes alumni who have provided
distinguished contributions to the
profession, the field of engineering, the
college, or society at large.
Ash has provided scholarships to
engineering students for more than
20 years, but her commitment goes
well beyond this financial one. She
has given many years of service on the
USF College of Engineering Advisory
Board, which is responsible for advising
and counseling on academic and
fundraising initiatives. Ash has served
as chairwoman of the USF Engineering
Alumni Society, which organizes
fundraising activities for the College.
Ash holds bachelor’s and master’s
degrees from the University of South
Florida and founded The Ash Group,
which last year became part of Ayres
Associates. Her expertise is built upon
more than three decades of work in
civil engineering for public and private
sector infrastructure; subsurface utility
engineering; utility infrastructure
design, construction management,
and inspection; and water resources,
marine, ecological, and environmental
engineering. Her municipal experience
includes over 300 miles of water
transmission and distribution lines,
upgraded booster pumps, and modified
water treatment facilities.
Award recognizes LA pioneer
David Schreiber’s
dedication to raising
the professional
status of landscape
architects is one of
many accomplishments
that recently made him
the worthy posthumous recipient of
the Wisconsin Chapter of the American
Society of Landscape Architects’ 2017
Lifetime Achievement Award. Schreiber,
partner in Madison, Wisconsin-based
SAA Design Group before Ayres
Associates acquired the firm in 2015,
died in 2016 in a horseback riding
accident.
He was known for his commitment
to Wisconsin licensure for landscape
architects, as well as for raising the
stature of the profession to the point
that landscape architects now manage
project teams that include planners
and engineers. He mentored dozens of
employees over the years and carefully
listened to clients before delivering
projects that brought new vitality
to communities through downtown
redevelopment and waterfront planning.
Throughout his career he stressed
the value of sustainability and the
preservation of natural areas.
