RECOGNISING EXCELLENCE IN DESIGN
The Trends International Design Awards are an opportunity to recognise outstanding homes in a variety of countries.
The two homes featured here were designed to respond to very different external factors. Dalman Architecture's rural
home makes the most of the expansive views without major concerns about privacy – while Julie Firkin Architects
had to consider neighbouring properties in the renovation and addition to a Victorian terrace home.
NEW ZEALAND ARCHITECT-DESIGNED NEW HOME
HIGHLY COMMENDED
DALMAN ARCHITECTURE
This five-bedroom family home sits on top of a rolling
hill offering mountain, lake and farmland views. Dalman
Architecture configured the house to reveal itself on
approach, disguising its overall size from first view – its
three main structures each containing different functions.
AUSTRALIAN ARCHITECT-DESIGNED RENOVATION
WINNER
JULIE FIRKIN ARCHITECTS
After stripping out a 1960s refit, architect Julie Firkin
was able to give an open flow to the interiors of this
Victorian terrace home. She then added extra space by
including a mezzanine level, plus a new contemporary
upper level containing the master suite and a bedroom.
