It has been announced that Donald Trump is now the president of the United States. Trump secured his place by winning the most electoral votes – 279 compared to Hillary Clinton’ s 228. Trump received 59.4 million votes compared to Clinton’ s 59.6 million votes, meaning he lost the popular vote.( Parfitt, 2016)
Tears were shed, and there was a sombre mood, all the pictures photographed were focused on distraught women, showing the sadness and desperation of equality.( Nauman, 2016) The president has been frequently called out for objectifying women – it is a common pattern through his history of having a tendency to make sexist remarks and criticising them. An example of this was him saying“ no one would vote for his former rival Carly Fiorina because of her face”( Cohen, 2016).
In the 90’ s Donald Trump said many controversial things about women such as belittling his then wife, Ivana Trump. Trump said“ I would never buy Ivana any decent jewels or pictures. Why give her negotiable assets?”. Trump also bought the beauty pageant Miss USA. When asked how he was going to change the pageant he told Howard Stern“ I’ m going to get the bathing suits to be smaller and the heels to be higher.”
It only became increasingly worse in the 2000’ s when he rated women he wanted to have sexual relations with. The list mentioned women such as Cameron Diaz, Julia Roberts, Cindy Crawford and Princess Diana. His comments on the Princess were“ she had the height, she had the beauty, she had the skin – the whole thing. She was crazy, but these are minor details.”
In the modern day Donald Trump has becoming increasingly unpopular with women due to his Twitter account. Trump has taken to Twitter to share sexist remarks. He has used this social media platform to publically shame his rival, Hillary Clinton, in which he retweeted,“ If Hillary Clinton can’ t satisfy her husband what makes her think she can satisfy America?”( Cohen, 2016)
The most outrageous comment he has probably said to date was that of how abortion should be punishable, which caused mass outrage.
Trump revealed that he was pro-choice for years, but decided to change his view and to back a ban. His campaign was that he believes that abortion should be legal only if the woman has been raped, a victim of incest or when the mother’ s life is on the line. Referring to women who would go against the ban, he told MSNBC,“ There has to be some sort of punishment”( Cohen, 2016; Sculthis, 2016).
This shows that women can use Trump’ s comments this to fight back, in showing their confidence and wanting their own freedom. Donald Trumps initial win has upset everyone due to what Trump has actually said, but the way he has spoken about women has empowered them into contributing towards girl power and feminism. It has caused a union in the freedom of women and their rights, across the country.
