When Donald Trump became president social media soon blew up with the phrase
‘#hesnotmypresident’ with many people making comments such as “but he is a racist, a sexist, a
bigot, a demagogue and an ignorant ham sandwich that somehow became sentient” and “Trump
did not win today. Hate won. Fear won. Racism won. Sexism won. Prejudice won. Homophobia
won.” (Van Dyke, 2016)
This could have fuelled the anti-Trump protests, where people held up banners with
comments such as “I did not choose a bigot to be my president.” The riots took place in Portland,
Ore. And Los Angeles At least 185 people were arrested in LA, and more than 225 people were
arrested across various cities.
4,000 people turned up at the peak of Portland’s riot. They spray painted buildings,
smashed electrical boxers and confronted drivers, along with damaging car windows in a car
dealership. To try and stop the protesters, police used pepper spray and rubber baton rounds.
Apparently peaceful protesters did try to stop the more violent protesters, but were not so
fortunate. Protesters shot flares into the air and lit fires. Pete Simpson, public information officer
for Portland Police Department said “It’s definitely fair to say we are significantly outnumbered.”
(Sottile, Schmidt and Murphy, 2016)
This illustrates the union and confidence in which young women and men are fighting
against Trump to regain women’s rights. It demonstrates their spontaneity and their power in
coming together to get across brave independence against Donald Trump.
