to help us put our designs together more quickly . Some of this involved adding engineering equations and performance tables that were traditionally found in design manuals or manufacturer books . Some of it has involved pre-completing tasks that every project was going to need done throughout its course . And a lot of it is doing those repetitive things that come up on project after project after project .”
The core functionality within the MEPPP is based on the same engineering equations and decisions made on every project by using smarter performance-based mechanical “ families .” For example , an engineer knows that the product of airflow , specific heat , density , and temperature difference defines sensible energy . With those metrics available in the model , the model can now perform those energy calculations dynamically for someone to review instead of manual calculations and data entry .
Another example can be found in the MEPPP diffuser content . Engineers need to select those off-design conditions that include noise criteria ( NC ). With performance tables built into the family content , the engineer can specify a Design NC value of 30 , and once airflow is entered , the diffuser can select its

WHAT IS A MECHANICAL FAMILY ?

A “ family ” is a group of elements with a common set of properties ( called parameters ) and a related graphical representation . Different elements belonging to a family may have different values for some or all of their parameters , but the set of parameters – i . e ., their names and meanings – is the same . These variations within the family are called family types or types .
For example , the structural column category includes families and family types used to create different wide flanged , precast concrete , angle , and other columns .
The sprinkler category includes families and family types used to create different dry and wet sprinkler systems .
