TECHNOLOGY Issue 12: Segmenting the target audience Another issue with regards to acquiring these skills is that it requires specific mentorship for some, but not for others. For example, while some participants expressed interest in Photoshop workshops, others reflected that such skills can be self-taught. This would depend on the level of expertise and experience that the participants have with technology. Overall, when it comes to workshops and programs, the youth feel that the target audience should be segmented based on: 1. 2. Level of expertise Field of work/interest (relevance) Issue 13: Engaging the older generation An area of concern that the participants highlighted was the incorporation of technology in the lives of the older generation within the Tamil community. It was shared that many from the older generation (such as parents, uncles, aunts and grandparents) are still reluctant to embrace technology due to a lack of trust and unfamiliarity. There are many tools and services that are being untapped on by the community such as online payment of bills, video conferencing and online shopping. Of those who do use technology, specifically social networking platforms, the biggest issue is the onset of spam and fake news messages. Teaching them discernment seemed to be of significance to the participants. Although media literacy is significantly important, it is perhaps a day-to-day, deeply personal venture. This concern might be beyond our scope of action at the moment. Maathi Yosi | 2019 57
