ENTREPRENEURSHIP Issue 6: Lack of interest in entrepreneurship Key traits of entrepreneurs Participants indicated passion, creativity, confidence, and hard work among others as essential attributes of entrepreneurs but risk-taking was unanimously agreed upon as the most prominent. This was due to the societal emphasis on the static education system and its rigid definition of success, which creates the idea that there is only one path to success. As a result, entrepreneurship is met with social stigma and entrepreneurs are perceived as unnecessarily taking risks. Reasons to pursue entrepreneurship Participants cited their need for freedom through self-employment and financial independence, a desire to address needs and solve problems, making a career out of one’s passions, and the potential for profit as the driving forces behind entrepreneurship Reasons not to pursue entrepreneurship Participants explained that a lot of willpower was needed as entrepreneurship was a long game with high risks. They also expressed fears such as a lack of information and knowledge or of one’s idea not being unique or marketable. Maathi Yosi | 2019 35
