COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
This section will present the issues raised during the Community
Development discussions as well as address concerns expressed through the
ground survey which were not discussed.
The issues raised were centred around 2 main topics:
1.
2.
Race relations
Bullying
The discussions held during the seminar focused on racial relations, which
corresponds with our ground survey results. As seen in figure 7, 53.5% of the
respondents felt racial and religious discord was a major problem faced by the
Tamil community. Bullying was another notable area of concern, but it was
not discussed in the seminar owing to time constraints as well as participants’
lack of interest in the issue.
Based on the discussions, participants put forward some recommendations to
encourage greater racial and religious harmony. We have presented our own
suggestions aimed at addressing bullying based on gaps in current research
and efforts.
