RAISING AWARENESS
Cincinnati Ohio
On April 24, 2019 TRC employees from the Cincinnati,
Ohio office visited Rumpke’s Material Recovery Facility
(MRF) hosted by Hamilton County Recycling and Solid
Waste District. Rumpke presented strategies on how
businesses can reduce waste, incorporate reuse, and
expand recycling in their operations. During the tour
of Rumpke’s state-of-the-art facility, TRC saw firsthand
the process of sorting and separating recyclables.
TRC employees learned what can and can’t be
recycled. The tour drove home the considerable
effort to get a pure recycle stream. Seeing how
non-recyclables, such as plastic grocery bags,
can stop the sorting and separating process gave
employees a greater motivation for only putting
recyclable materials in office bins.

A dozen staffers in TRC’s Milwaukie, Oregon office
enjoyed an engaging presentation from a recycling
specialist with Clackamas County, including the ins
and outs of what is recyclable at work and home in the
Portland region. The presenter brought displays that
physically demonstrated the products that should or
should not go in a Portland area recycling bin. While
the audience was relatively well versed in recycling
and sustainability more broadly (for example, attend-
ees planned a zero-waste lunch for the presentation),
the presentation did surprise many with common
misconceptions on materials that are and are not
recyclable. All in attendance came away with a better
understanding of recycling and what additional
personal actions they can take to make an impact.
Houston, Texas
The Houston Richmond office hosts an office get
together each month. In April the meeting was
dedicated to Sustainability topics, including recycling
options specific to the City and techniques for at home
composting. Employees brought their favorite dips
in reusable or recyclable containers and had organic
vegetables and chips to enjoy them with. The team
collected any food scraps at the end for composting.
