VALUING SAFETY At TRC, we understand that our success depends on our ability to provide a culture where safety is inherent at all levels of the organization. Our Executive Safety Council comprised of our CEO and Chief Risk Officer, as well as representatives from each of our four operating sectors and Human Resources, provides oversight and leadership for the safety program at TRC. The council meets monthly and is led by TRC’s National Safety Director. TRC’s National Safety Director and Chief Risk Officer also provide a detailed report of incidents, best practices and safety metrics to our Board of Directors on a quarterly basis. Our Office Safety Coordinator (OSC) network is a key factor in supporting safety initiatives and communicating safe work strategies to employees. The OSC network, comprised of more than 90 members, continues to provide safety leadership and support, resulting in our best safety metrics in company history in FY19. OSCs help address risks identified with project work and are a direct resource to staff in their immediate and local offices. We continue to invest in the OSC network by hosting an annual conference and providing technical training and safety leadership skills. TRC has had a health and safety management system based on OHSAS 18001, with a certified management system in our Shanghai China office. We are currently transitioning the management system from the OHSAS 18001 format to ISO 45001. We understand that a systematic approach provides a more consistent and sustainable method of managing occupational safety. Our safety recognition program is used to identify best practices and promote safety leadership throughout the organization. Employees who are nominated through the program may receive commendation at a local team meeting, be featured in TRC’s employee newsletter or in one of TRC’s safety bulletins communicated to all employees, and/or receive a monetary gift/award. 24 2019 Sustainability Report Risk and Hazard Identification With a significant number of employees driving vehicles on behalf of the business and working in field locations, the primary causes of work-related incidents in FY19 were motor vehicle incidents, slips and falls, and biological hazards. To reduce the risks associated with these hazards and continually improve safety performance, TRC’s Executive Safety Council, along with our Safety Department, developed the following mitigation strategies: ■ Improvement of our hazard recognition program and collection of leading indicator data. The program saw a significant increase in Safe Catch reports and safety observations/audits conducted by both safety staff and employees. ■ Implementation of an electronic app for performing safety observations and submitting Safe Catch reports has contributed to more detailed reporting that allows us to better trend data and respond to any variances. ■ We continue to increase focus on DOT and Motor Vehicle Safety. TRC is in full compliance with the new DOT Electronic Logging Device (ELD) requirement and has implemented a telematics to enhance fleet safety management, inclusive of additional driver assessment and training. We have also invested in a real-time driver monitoring program that provides us immediate notification of potential driver risks. ■ We have implemented our Electronic Incident Management System (Intelex) to improve our incident notification and investigation process, and to promote more timely and effective corrective actions and lessons learned. ■ Finally, we have developed and implemented training associated with biological hazards and have provided field kits to help with prompt self-treatment for minor incidents. As TRC continues to grow, our safety program must continue to evolve in order to be transitional and sustainable for our existing and new employees. Areas of focus for our safety program in FY20 include Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery; enhancing our employee on-boarding program through mentorship, training, oversight and other touchpoints; and implementing technology solutions to efficiently analyze and react to data trends.
