SUCCESS IN OUR OFFICES
KANSAS CITY RECYCLES GLASS
As part of our annual Earth Day initiative, our Kansas
City office committed to increasing their landfill diversion
rate and expanding their recycling stream by working with
Ripple Glass. The office is now using a purple recycling
bin utilized just for glass, which can be dropped off at any
of the 100 locations within the city. Ripple Glass utilizes a
local processing plant and partners with local businesses
to recycle the glass into fiber insulation. This effort saves
energy, decreases emissions, and diverts perfectly good
glass from landfills.
PAPER REDUCTION IN HR
An example of our efforts to reduce paper use lies in
our human resources department. The department
has gone completely paperless with materials sent out
to new hires regarding job offers, on-boarding, and
benefits, as well as with our Open Enrollment process
for benefits to current employees. Ten years ago we
launched the first paperless Open Enrollment process
for benefits, and we are now completely paperless. We
also moved our total benefits award statement online
instead of sending paper statements in the mail.
LESS MILES MEANS MORE SUSTAINABILITY
AT AIR MEASUREMENTS IN GAINESVILLE
Field work in Air Measurements usually means driving
10 to 20 thousand pound of vehicles and equipment to
a client’s facility. In Gainesville Florida, test projects tend
to be short and involve more miles per dollar of revenue.
Project Manager Dustin Banks goes to great lengths to
minimize the impact of travel by grouping multiple
projects into a single trip. Sometimes this means
traveling on Sunday to maximize the time available
for testing during the work week. “Coordinating my
projects this way, I am able to provide competitive
pricing to clients while minimizing the environmental
impact of our travel,” explains Banks.
Every test bundled saves:
■ ■ 5000 miles of tire wear (500 miles x 10 tires),
and the associated particulate pollution
■ ■ 500 miles of truck and trailer mechanical life
■ ■ 50 gallons of diesel fuel
■ ■ 1 gallon of diesel exhaust fluid
■ ■ 200 grams of NOx tailpipe emissions
■ ■ 10 grams of particulate tailpipe emissions
LOWELL LIGHTING CHANGE OFFICE SPACE PLANNING
Our office in Lowell worked with the property
management and National Grid to perform an audit
on the office lighting. Roughly 150 employees work
in our Lowell office, which occupies three floors of the
building. The results of the energy audit showed an
estimated savings of over 34,000 kWh by switching
to all LED lighting. This equates to 37,923 pounds
of CO2 avoided annually. With a savings of almost
$5,000 annually, the payback period for the upgrade
is less than 2 years. We have initiatives to reduce unnecessary office space.
A 60,000 sq ft reduction in FY17 equates to:
30
■ ■ 500,000 kWh reduction
■ ■ 372 MT CO2e annual emissions reduction
■ ■ and the equivalent of removing approximately
80 passenger vehicles from the road
