The Materialist ’ s Good
There is a dangerous cynicism in society . An ocean of facts surrounds us , we value the objective , the visible , and the provable , yet mass ignorance and hate also do . This environment leads to the virulent philosophy that humanity is naturally evil . Some fight against it , often approaching it rhetorically , arguing for the good of the human soul . However , they are shot down coldly for not having evidence , believing in an unprovable soul , and not seeing things from a more materialist , scientific perspective . So many give up . Many believe that change is pointless and impossible and that all evidence points to an evil , ignorant humanity . We must fight this resignation . We must fight it with the same coldness that they employ . We must fight materialism with materialism . Against this nihilism , we can only say that humanity is fundamentally " good ," even without a soul -- That our instinct is to help others , and that societies originated from a need for the common good in tribes-- . Moreover , we , purely due to our animalistic need to help others , must follow in the footsteps of our ancestors , returning to fight for the common good . Because we may not have souls , we may be purely a lump of cells that gained consciousness while acting purely on instinct , yet our instinct is good . Even without a soul , we are good .
