For context , as indigenous communities in Paraguay continued losing many of their vital waterways and land as it was converted into farmland , they lost the natural resources that came along with them . This resulted in the inhibition of their daily rituals . The UNHRC ’ s report claimed that ceremonial baptisms and other rituals were no longer occurring as the resources to do so were not present . “ By halting such ceremonies , children are denied a rite crucial to strengthening their cultural identity ” ( UN 9 ), and “ Most alarmingly , the indigenous community structure is being eroded and disintegrated as families are forced to leave their land .” ( UN 9 ). Protecting indigenous land will go a long way in restoring their former lands , ensuring that they can independently thrive and preserve their culture for generations to come .
Although mandating laws that protect indigenous rights is a step in the right direction , is it enough ? Are these laws being enforced ? Do the current laws cover a broad enough scope to handle all situations , or are there exploitative loopholes that external parties might take advantage of ? Ask yourself these questions , talk to someone , reflect , and generate social change . An indigenous heritage enshrined in the constitution , the cultural heritage that this nation was built upon , deserves to prevail for generations to come .
