THE LONG ROAD TO SAFETY
Already weakened by repeated crises, Sudan has been experiencing a civil war with disastrous human consequences since April 2023. A large number of victims are still diffcult to estimate, and massive destruction is having a lasting effect on the country ' s infrastructure. The armed conflict has caused the displacement of nearly 11.3 million people, including more than 3 million children, who have fled the violence to other regions or to neighbouring states.
To date, approximately 928,000 Sudanese refugees have crossed the border into Chad, one of the world ' s least-developed countries, ranking 190th out of 193 countries on the
UNDP ' s 2025 Human Development Index.
Photojournalist, Martin Bertrand spent time travelling the region, documenting the humanitarian crisis and how the victims are on The Long Road To Safety.
