beloved motorbike. At the port I looked at her, hugged her like I would a dear friend, and said thank you for taking us where we wanted to go.
“ Now get some rest, I’ ll see you back home.” I turned back and she had already disappeared into the container. So, what did we do then? What went on in the minds of two motorcyclists who had just realised a lifelong dream? What happened when you crossed the Ushuaia sign, only to discover the road didn’ t end there, after 11 months, 74,000 kilometres, and 17 countries? To be honest, I’ m still wondering how much that journey changed our lives. Knowing that we could abandon, at least temporarily, the comforts of home, the affections of others, and the company of our cats in exchange for the freedom of travelling as a couple on a loaded motorcycle carrying everything, we needed was wonderfully overwhelming.
We traded comfort for cold nights spent in tents in Labrador or on the Salar de Uyuni because watching the sunrise at 3,800 metres above sea level on the world’ s largest salt flat or watching icebergs pass just metres away made us feel more alive than we’ d ever felt. And who cared if in the morning we had no idea what we’ d eat or where we’ d sleep; it was the road and the encounters that marked the flow of our days.
It was neither easy nor difficult; it was real life, full of wonderful images, but also of monotonous days on straight roads in the Canadian fog or the stifling Florida heat. Real life because there were problems, with the police or at the borders, the falls that counterbalanced the wonderful people who supported and helped us even if we were on the other side of the world.
In that dimension, where the journey seemed never-ending, seeing that sign made us cry with joy and sadness, a swing of emotions between the satisfaction of having done what we wanted and the disappointment of having reached the end of a unique journey.
Would we do it again? We already had, on the plane back, because a journey began as soon as you start thinking about it! FC & SB
