allowing its behaviour to better match the rider ' s demands," Ono explains.
" In addition, downshifts now incorporate an automatic blip function, enabling smoother and more seamless downshifting."
Auto-blipping has become familiar technology on high-performance motorcycles.
During aggressive downshifts, the engine speed must rise to match the lower gear. Traditionally, skilled riders achieved this with a carefully timed throttle blip while operating the clutch. Modern quickshifters automate that process electronically. Honda goes one step further. The E-Clutch simultaneously blips the throttle while also slipping the clutch to smooth torque delivery.
" Similar to downshifting with a quickshifter, the system blips the throttle to match the engine speed to the appropriate RPM after the downshift," Ono says.
" However, because the E-Clutch also engages halfclutch control, it achieves a smoother downshift overall." The benefits become particularly noticeable under hard braking.
Anyone who has entered a corner a little too enthusiastically knows how an untidy downshift can unsettle a motorcycle, causing the rear wheel to chatter or hop as engine speed struggles to match road speed.
Honda ' s latest software actively monitors this behaviour.
" During rapid deceleration, the load on the rear tyre can be reduced, causing the rear wheel rotation to lag behind the vehicle ' s actual speed," Ono explains.
" If load is reapplied to the rear tyre while in this state, the mismatch cannot be fully absorbed, resulting in wheel hop. The system detects this condition and applies half-clutch control. By allowing the clutch to slip rather than the tyre, vehicle stability is improved."
It is a subtle intervention that many riders may never consciously notice, but it represents a significant evolution in how electronic rider aids interact with a motorcycle ' s transmission.
Developing that sophistication was far from straightforward.
Each Honda engine behaves differently. An inline four delivers power in an entirely different manner to a parallel twin. Differences in crankshaft inertia, torque pulses, throttle response and engine braking all demanded unique calibration.
" Each engine had its own characteristics, so it required settings tailored accordingly," Ono says.
" In particular, we struggled with accommodating differences in rotational fluctuations, as well as variations in engine response and torque delivery."
Throttle-by-wire introduced another layer of complexity.
Selecting Rain mode softens throttle response, while Sport mode sharpens it considerably. Because the throttle grip no longer directly controls the butterflies inside the throttle bodies, the clutch software must continuously calculate how the engine will respond under each riding mode.
" Depending on the selected mode, such as RAIN or SPORT, the actual throttle butterfly opening varies relative to the grip opening," Ono explains.
" The E-Clutch performs appropriate clutch control in accordance with these changes in butterfly valve opening."
Adventure riders may stand to benefit more than anyone else.
Slow-speed off-road riding often demands delicate clutch work while simultaneously balancing over loose surfaces, controlling the throttle, modulating the brakes and picking a line through unpredictable terrain.
Honda believes E-Clutch reduces that workload without removing rider involvement.
" First, the presence of the E-Clutch eliminates concerns about engine stalling," Ono says.
" It also removes the need to worry about operating the clutch lever. As a result, riders can focus on riding with greater confidence during off-road conditions, where increased attention to surface conditions is required."
The system can even execute smooth gear changes while the rear wheel is spinning on loose surfaces, maintaining forward drive without introducing sudden shocks through the transmission.
Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Honda ' s design philosophy is what it deliberately chose not to change.
Unlike a DCT-equipped motorcycle, every traditional control remains exactly where riders expect it to be.
