The rainforest closes in at times, the road cutting a narrow path through dense, ancient growth. Then, just as suddenly, it opens out into the stark, almost otherworldly terrain around Queenstown, where the hills stand bare and exposed, their colours shifting through shades of ochre and grey. Rain, when it comes— and it will— changes everything again. It softens the edges of the landscape, deepens the colours, and introduces a level of complexity to the ride that is both challenging and strangely satisfying.
