HARROW VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA

Harrow is the kind of town that seems almost suspended in time, where the pace of life follows the gentle curve of the Glenelg River rather than the demands of a modern clock. Nestled in the southern Wimmera, close to the borderlands of western Victoria, this small country settlement of barely over a hundred people carries a weighty distinction: it is Victoria’ s oldest inland town. Its history is tangible at every turn, from the weathered brick facades along Blair Street to the monuments that mark the passage of explorers and the stories of those who shaped the land long before the town existed. Major Thomas Mitchell’ s 1836 crossing of the Glenelg River is commemorated with a modest plaque, yet it speaks volumes of the daring journeys that opened the region to settlement. The town also quietly honours Johnny‘ Unaarrimin’ Mullagh, the Indigenous cricketer whose feats on the 1868 Aboriginal tour of England brought international attention to his skill, resilience, and the strength of his community.
