orchards and vegetables. This oasis stop bridged our way to Ghardaia, a gem of Algerian travel. We lamented the changes modernity had wrought, fearing the loss of Ghardaia’ s soul and authenticity. Five villages; Ghardaia, Melika, Beni Isguen, Bou Noura, and El Atteuf, formed a harmonious community along the Oued M’ Zab. This refuge, established in the early 11th century by Mozabites fleeing persecution, inspired visions of purity with its pyramid-like minarets and concentric labyrinth of streets leading from mosques to homes, commercial squares, and artisan quarters. The simplicity reflected a refusal of excess, embracing beauty through harmony.
The final chapter unfolded in El Oued, its domed architecture reminiscent of the dunes ' gentle curves. Even after traversing 5,000 kilometres, we’ d become awestruck by landscapes that shifted from golden sands to lush green fields. The palms here thrived, their roots reaching deep into the water table, producing the prized Deglet Nour dates. As the journey wound to its close, a winter chill whispered through the land, reminding us of time’ s relentless passage. ES & CZ
