And the smartphone’ s satellite SOS is a handy third line of defence, provided you’ re in a supported coverage area and it’ s not your only safety net. If you must choose only one, and your route takes you through countries with tight telecom laws, the PLB may well be the smarter pick.
Before you spin the throttle, do the prep. Map your route and note legal restrictions. Register your PLB or activate your satellite plan. Check if your smartphone’ s satellite SOS will work along your route. Brief your emergency contacts on your itinerary. And always carry the device on your person, not just on your bike; if you’ re separated from the machine, you’ ll still have your lifeline.
