Alone in the fading light, you sit in the dust where the road ends and silence begins.
You’ ve dropped off the map. The two-track you were following on your adventure bike just dissolved into switchbacks and loose shale. One awkward dab later and you’ re sitting in the dust with a tweaked ankle, the light draining from the sky, and a phone that’ s as useful as a brick. There’ s no service, no passersby, and no good reason for anyone to come looking for you here. Your jacket pocket holds one small lifeline, but is it a Personal Locator Beacon, a two-way satellite messenger like a Garmin inReach or SPOT, or perhaps just the phone itself, now boasting the latest emergency satellite connectivity feature?
For motorcyclists who wander beyond the grid, whether that’ s across Moroccan pistes, Andean passes, or Australia’ s Red Centre, each of these options has its place. All can save lives. All have limits. But if we’ re talking about raw, get-me-out-of-here rescue capability, the humble PLB still has the edge in sheer simplicity, ruggedness, and legality in more corners of the world than you might expect.

Press the button on a PLB and your signal skips past subscription services and call centres, heading straight into Cospas – Sarsat, the government-run, multinational search-and-rescue system used by ships, planes, and mountaineers alike. That distress pulse rides the 406 MHz band up to satellites in low, medium, and geostationary orbits, is confirmed by a Mission Control Centre, and lands directly in the hands of the nearest Rescue Coordination Centre. No middleman. No customer account to check. No payment plan that might have expired when you needed it most.
