covering and a bug defence system. Beyond the insect warfare, the Dempster Highway gave me something else, clarity.
It strips you bare. Not just literally, as you dive into the Arctic Ocean, but emotionally. There’ s no cell reception, no curated playlist, no algorithm suggesting your next experience. Just the roar of the engine, the crunch of gravel, and the sky— vast and open and utterly indifferent to your plans.
If you’ re thinking about tackling the Dempster, don’ t just pack your panniers— pack your humility. The road will test your skills. The weather will test your patience. And the mosquitoes will test your very will to live … mine was very nearly taken from me … in a black cloud filled with my own blood.
But you’ ll come back with stories. With grit. With a taste of a north that isn’ t polished for tourists or engineered for Instagram. A place where the road is the destination, and where adventure isn ' t a brand— it ' s survival with a smile. And the bears? Never saw one. But the mosquitoes? They ' re probably still talking about me, laughing that I turned up with spray for the large predators and nothing for the small ones. Bastards! Never turn your back to them! LW
TRAVERSE was invited to ride Canada ' s Dempster Highway with Arctic Moto Adventures. The Dempster itself was an easy gravel road, we had perfect conditions most of the way, the challenge of the road was little, the challenge and splendour of the environment was epic. If an an overland adventure is your thing then a ride with Arctic Moto Adventures to the top of the world is just the thing for you.
