According to local oral history, the first iTaukei( indigenous Fijians) landed here around 3,500 years ago. A visit to Viseisei offers a fascinating window into the traditional village structure and customs that continue to shape Fijian life.
Visitors are welcome but should observe local protocol— wearing a sulu( sarong), removing hats, and seeking permission before entering. Many tours to the village include a sevusevu( kava ceremony) to honour tradition and open dialogue with the village chief or elders.
