A sort of piece offering as an apology for his making fun of me. I hadn’ t been offended, sucking my stomach in and trying to replace it with the cucumber. Everyone laughed and the ice was broken. A very humbling insight into these people.
Insights as such became a common occurrence. Riding to Lagoas Tacitolo on the outskirts of Dili provided a glimpse into the demeanour of the people of Timor- Leste. Here many households had been forcibly moved to make way for grounds and an alter for the visiting Catholic Pope. In a country that is recognised as being the most Catholic on the planet, it was important, and the local people seemed not to care that their homes had to be moved.
The lakeside villages were a delight. Children of all ages congregated as we were given a lesson on the recent history and want it meant to be a resident of this area. The children were full of joy, many some of the happiest people I’ ve ever had the pleasure of meeting, the obvious barrier of language replaced
