TRAVERSE 47
4. Curiosity – Asking Why
Travel gives you permission to ask why. Why does this culture eat this way? Why is that festival so important? Why does this place feel so different from home? Why do people live like this?
Because you’ re a foreigner, you don’ t look stupid asking these questions— curiosity is expected. The more you lean into curiosity, the more rewarding travel becomes— and that curiosity follows you home. You start to question your own habits, assumptions, and beliefs.
Lesson: Travel teaches you to wonder about the world— and about yourself.
5. Initiative— Owning Your Own Experience In unfamiliar places, no one is coming to save you. You have to figure out transport, food, local customs, and awkward social moments— all on your own.
Travel rewards those who take initiative— who ask for directions, seek help, try the weird dish, or say yes to an unexpected invite. The more foreign the culture, the more you have to step up— and the more you gain from the experience.
Lesson: Travel reminds you that you are responsible for your own experience— in travel and in life.
