precedence. I reflected on a sign that was across the road, a political statement of its own,“ Farewell From Kurow: World Birthplace Of Social Security”. I wondered if this afternoons ritual was something to do with that. The truth is social security was indeed created in Kurow when local politician Arnold Nordmeyer put in place a scheme to look after local workers on the hydroelectric project. Earling morning gave the first impressions of how colourful New Zealand could be. A hillside vantage point provided spectacular scenes across the township to the nearby hills. The morning sun illuminating mist as it rose from the streams surrounding the town, highlighting ridges and peaks. A lone tree, obviously struck down at some point, seemed defiant, silhouetted against the orange sky, and highlighted clouds.
My partner pointed to the right motioning toward a track, exclaiming that“ Danseys Pass is down that way”. An enjoyable gravel track, apparently, with a pretty cool pub toward the end of it. I nodded and looked at the surrounding environment, both distant and near.
