TRAVERSE 12
A welcome to Timor-Leste is provided via the President Nicolau Lobato International Airport, named for the first prime minister of the newly independent Democratic Republic of East Timor in 1975 before the Indonesia invasion the same year. The airport is the first lesson into the modern history and independence of Timor-Leste, as well as the beginning of your riding and cultural experience in this land.
Just thirty United States dollars, cash only, is all that is required to obtain a visa on arrival, there’ s little questioning, some formalities, and a friendly“ welcome to Timor-Leste, please enjoy our nation”, and although a little frenetic it is one of the easiest passport controls you’ ll find anywhere in the world.
From the airport to the accommodation in Timor-Leste’ s capital city is an experience that shouldn’ t be missed for Dili is neither a modern nor an ancient city, and yet it doesn’ t fit anywhere in between. Dili is unique in its own personality, a city trying not to be anything other than itself filled with a people of the same mindset. It’ s wonderfully refreshing.
Dive Timor, our accommodation in Dili, is a wonderful oasis amongst the hustle
