Like so many other great roads , The Pamir Highway is often a lonely desolate place , a road that follows a dangerous path , clinging to the sides of cliffs and traversing the highest passes . The environment is unforgiving , treacherous enough that it breeds a compassionate people full of giving , something that we were to discover numerous times along this so-called highway .
The Pamir is the second highest highway in the world , only beaten by the Karakorum , a road that terminates not too far away across the Wakhan Corridor in nearby Pakistan . The Pamir is Tajikistan ’ s road , in many ways , it ’ s claim to fame , as it strikes a path across the entire country .
Reaching the most northern extreme of the Tajik border with Afghanistan we ’ d followed the Pamir south through a series of switchbacks and high tracks , eventually getting us to Khorog , our home for two nights to become accustomed to the increasing altitude .
