being mostly Hindu , a religion that predates Buddhism by at least a thousand years , and is evident throughout this region of Nepal , in fact the Nepalese populace is around 95 % Hindu . It becomes more visible as you ride further west , then north , from the plains and into the foothills of the Himalayas . This is a region where the tropical farmlands become mountainous , sub-tropical and spectacular in the natural and human influenced environments .
From the far western border with India head north into a region of mountain tracks and cliffside communities before turning east to start the ride back to Kathmandu . It ’ s an area where the foreign rider seldom visits , the local people know this and open their hearts as a welcome to the traveller daring to visit their lands . It ’ s not uncommon for a welcoming gesture soon has you inside someone ’ s home enjoying a refreshing iced tea and slice of watermelon .
The tracks barely exist , a challenge for most riders , yet provide a laugh at the end of each day enjoyed with an ice-cold local beer . The look of surprise that sweeps across the face of a shepherd , ploughing farmer , or school children walking home is part of the adventure that everyone should seek . These human interactions come cheaply yet are priceless treasures that will last a lifetime .
