for a period they succeeded . As the Danish numbers grew they reached cities such as Eoforwic and renamed it Jórvik . Now known as York , a city that has rich history , and one that was starting to fall into place for me .
We meandered through the small streets of Lindisfarne , the small fishing village overlooked by the castle . The abbey , again in ruins , bronze statues to Saints , and Viking heritage that pertained to what was to come . It was making sense .
The returning boat ride to Seahouses took us past one of the most impressive sights along the entire north coast . A castle that seemed defiant of all the misdoings of the past , solemn in its strength . The ‘ oracle ’ became giddy , blushing like a school kid who ’ d just seen his first nipple .
“ Look , it ’ s Bebbanburg ,” he squealed , as I laughed that his adopted Yorkshireman accent had been replaced with that of nasally Australian schoolgirl .
“ No , that ’ s Bamburgh Castle ,” I was quick to point out . Technically he was right , but my moment had come , the history had sunk in .
