TRAVERSE 150
At sunset we descended into San Cristobal where we received a hearty welcome at the Posada La Estancia de Bolivar . We were reluctant to leave Venezuela , but we were officially out of cash and had no way to stay . Our tentative two weeks had been stretched to three and we had fallen in love with the country . Not only did it have breathtaking scenery from white beaches and yellow sand dunes to remote mountains where you feel like you ’ ve travelled back in time , but its people were the kindest and most generous we ’ d ever met . We joked that in Venezuela you can ’ t get anywhere - not for lack of petrol , but because of all the people that stop you for a chat .
The country may be in a crisis , but its people have been busy adapting , surviving , and making the best of a tough situation for so long that helping each other out and getting on with it has become a way of life . They are proud of the beauty of their country and can ’ t wait to show it off to anyone venturing a visit . MS
