TRAVERSE 11
In places no more than fifteen kilometres across , the Wakhan Corridor is that narrow strip of land that separates Pakistan from Tajikistan , an appendix of Afghanistan that points toward China , a section of land created with an agreement between Britain and Afghanistan more than one hundred and thirty years ago in a small part of history known as “ the Great Game ”.
The narrow strip became a buffer between the British Empire , and its Raj in what is now the disputed territory of Kashmir , and that of the Russian Empire as it spread into Central Asia . Both sides conceded that a shared border would create great conflict and thus the Wakhan Corridor was born .
Today the corridor remains , a home to the Afghan people known as the Wakhi and Pamiri , a strip that still separates nations and has become somewhat necessary for the adventurous motorcycle traveller , at least on the Tajiki side of the Panj and Pamir rivers , the natural border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan . The Pamir Highway , both old and new , is a road that sits high on many riders ’ lists .
