YOU LIVE MORE IN FIVE MINUTES
A number of us motorists have a secret ' bucket list ', something that resides in the back of our minds , magical places that we must experience for ourselves once in our life . Be it the loneliest highway , the most drivable road in the middle of nowhere , the windiest 100 kilometres , or as in my case , the fastest place in the world .
The huge dry salt lakes in the US state of Utah are definitely one of the places where the highest land speeds of over 1,000 km / h have been achieved . At the beginning of the last century , thirty-five thousand square metres of salt covered the area that was once Lake Bonneville , today not even half of that area remains . Since 1917 the mining of potash salt , to be used as fertiliser has increased , reducing both the land mass of salt surface as well as the thickness of the layer , the ‘ Salt Flats ’ are shrinking .
Originally , our plan was to start west from Salt Lake City , from the town of Wendover to experience fever on the salt for a few days before our trip over the classics , Bryce Canyon , Grand Canyon , Las Vegas then leading on to Las Angeles . But as is often the case when travelling by motorcycle , spontaneity proves to be the best route planner . Rain before Speed Week meant the planned event had to be postponed , and therefore our ride started in a northerly direction .
On two brand new Indian Touring press vehicles , a wine-red Pursuit Limited Premium ICON edition with an 1800 cc PowerPlus engine from the Challenger model series and a Chieftain Dark Horse with a 1900 cc Thunderstroke engine , chic grey , for my sister Maria , we headed off to Yellowstone National Park and its such a beautiful scenery , all in quadruple extra-large compared to our European Alps .
