MARREE SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Riding from the south , along the Outback Highway , you ’ ll pass many remains of a recent past and upon reaching the South Australian outback town of Marree you ’ ll be forgiven for assuming you ' ve reached an outpost of some frontier landscape . From the north it ’ s the thankful sight of civilisation that will welcome you as you realise that you ’ ve reached the end of the desert tracks . Marree is such that it poses a dilemma for any adventurous traveller .
The first Europeans to visit this flat , arid landscape , did so in 1840 however an official township didn ’ t eventuate until over forty years later when the Central Australian Railway reached the area , although a camp for telegraph
