a living history . Restaurants and bars are frequent but cater to the local lifestyle rather than that of the visitor , you won ’ t find fast food and trashy convenience here , Barichara is traditional and must remain so .
The architecture is similar to that of Salento or Villa de Leyva yet on a level that feels that it has been so for hundreds of years , and of course it has , by design and by decree . Barichara is one of seventeen towns throughout the country that has been nominated as a heritage region , something that has been done locally by Colombia , amazingly it doesn ’ t register on any UNESCO list . With the heritage decree it means that Barichara can ’ t be developed beyond what it already is and in so doing the history has remained intact .
We soon discovered it ’ s best to walk the streets of Barichara . Compact and like every traditional Colombian or colonial Spanish town , the streets are made for such a mode
