TRAVEL - USA
FRANCESCO CICCARELLO & SERENA BARONCINI
ONE TIME IN NEW ORLEANS
Our journey on American soil began in a small border post shrouded in fog between New Brunswick and Maine . The customs officer seemed to be wondering how it was possible for two Italians on Italian motorbikes to find themselves in this remote place at dusk on an early July evening as he went through the paperwork with an air of mixed amazement and curiosity .
Passports and motorcycle import documents stamped and off we went towards the SR9 which deceived us in the first kilometre with its wide lanes before turning into a provincial road with only a few large farms visible at its sides .
We were in Maine which represented the quintessential New England states . If nothing remained of the 20,000 natives who inhabited the area before the arrival of the Europeans , the spirit of the settlers who arrived in the 16th century to cultivate these lands while resisting the harsh winters still ran through the veins of those who lived here . Agriculture and lobster fishing supported what became the 23rd state of the confederacy in 1820 . We ’ d arrived very late at the campsite of the Acadia National Park , the real destination of the first days of travel and we immediately found the true spirit of the national park as a roe deer walked around us regardless of our presence and while we enjoyed our dinner he enjoyed looking for the tufts of the tastiest grass .
The Park Loop road allowed us to travel through a good part of the park ' s territory and , despite the humidity and cold reigning supreme on this rocky island covered in pine trees , we decided to travel it all . The ocean waves beat so hard on the high cliffs that Thunder Hole inlet is one of the most visited spots in the park due to the deep sound audible from a great distance . Sand Beach
