TRAVERSE 111
above all they are open territory to the passage of animals which , with great respect , are free to move idly on the road . Alongside the National Highways there are other types of road ; from two lanes that are more or less in good condition to a single lane for both directions . And finally the slopes , so bad that even the navigator advises against them but capable of taking you to places where time seems to have stopped .
As we travelled , being very careful not to get distracted while riding , we were struck by the presence of dromedaries along the road - which are used in India to tow the transport carts - making the landscape even more alive and fascinating together with the extraordinary colours of the saris worn by the women and are seemingly capable to set the landscape on fire . From reds to yellows , to greens , to oranges , in a range of shades enriched by a thousand decorations , in a unique and indescribable spectacle that we continued to have our eyes on .
The first part of the route towards Jaisalmer was made more challenging by road works which we found frequent at least up to Fatehpur , immediately after the extraordinary havelis of Mandawa .
