FINANCIAL WOWS AT CAKE
Known for its forward-thinking designs and a spirit of adventure , often pushing the boundaries of what is considered possible , Swedish electric motorcycle manufacturer CAKE has filed for bankruptcy .
The brand that was seen as a leader in proving that alternative vehicles could be a viable option , as undertaken recently by CAKE ’ s USA Sales Manager , Jackie Rosenstein and Bobbie Long as they became the first women to cross the United States by electric motorcycle ( full story in Traverse Issue 40 ). It was a feat that CAKE promoted heavily as they do with all of their exploits including providing vehicles for environmental campaigns in the Amazon and Africa . Yet it seems not to be enough .
The truth is , CAKEs bikes are expensive and like all current generation electric vehicles have a limited range meaning traditional motorcyclists were turned off with some suggesting it had to do with the “ utilitarian look of the CAKE bikes ”.
A number of factors have been stated by CAKE CEO and founder , Stefan Ytterborn , who has provided some details around the financial collapse as the worlds focus moving away from environmental issues to being dropped at the last minute by financial investors .
The Swedish manufacturer has recently been in collaboration talks with brands like Harley Davidson , yet all seem to have come to nothing .
Filing for bankruptcy in the Swedish courts in early February CAKEs sales have now been put on hold whilst a solution is found , ironically a year after Sinje Gottwald completed an amazing adventure as being the first to cross Africa on an electric motorcycle .
It ’ s not known what the future will hold for the unique brand .
