Kutupalong , it sounds like the name of an exotic location , a destination for intrepid travellers , those seeking adventure . In reality Kutupalong is an overcrowded warren of humanity , a camp with a population so crammed that it would rank number six on the populations list of Australian cities . Kutupalong is thirteen square kilometres of misery , heartbreak , and despair .
Located in the Chittagong Division of south-east Bangladesh , Kutupalong has quickly grown to be recognised as the world ' s largest refugee camp , a makeshift home for those fleeing persecution in their homeland of Myanmar .
As the Burmese military started their “ Operation Pyi Thaya ” ( Operation Clean and Beautiful Nation ) many Rohingya recognised that this was an organised operation resembling genocide as the military swept through northern Rakhine State in a show of force that was said to eradicate illegal foreigners and operative of the Rohingya Solidarity Organisation . In two short years , 1991-92 , more than 200,000 Rohingya people fled to neighbouring Bangladesh seeking protection . Camps grew near the town of Cox ’ s Bazar .
