TRAVEL - CANADA

FRANCESCO CICCARELLO ( W ) & SERENA BARONCINI ( P )

THE GREEN & THE RED

To depict Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island , firstly the dominant colours would be green and red . In the first of these two maritime provinces of Canada the green of the rolling meadows contrasts with the high granite cliffs into which the ocean waves crash . On Prince Edward Island , the smallest of the Canadian provinces , the sienna-coloured soil nourishes the vigorous pastures , painting the territory made up of farmhouses with pitched roofs that was so dear to the protagonists in Anne of Green Gables , by Canadian author Lucy Maude Montegomery in the early 20th century . Anne grew up in this area , on the thin strip of land , we discovered her story on our motorbike .

When the ferry from Newfoundland disembarked early in the morning in New Sidney , the sky was clear , and the sun warmed us and dried our gear from the cold and incessant rain of the previous days .
June is the beginning of the short summer for this corner of the world and its inhabitants demonstrate their love for this season by taking care of their gardens or pedaling their beloved bicycles . After months of cold darkness , where roads are covered in ice or snow , it ' s not difficult to imagine how they feel during these sunny , long days .
We immediately headed towards Cape Breton Island which we had reached thanks to the scenic Sea Island Bridge . We were travelling along the Trans Canada Highway , the longest highway in the world , which starts from the capital of British Columbia , Victoria , on the Pacific Coast and runs across the entire enormous Canadian territory to reach Saint John in Newfoundland on the Atlantic side . Despite the descriptions we ’ d read , we remained speechless for the beauty of the road that runs around the peninsula .
