consumers and yet the truth is the number of megapixels is redundant if the camera doesn ’ t have the sensor size to cope with it .
A larger sensor captures more light and therefore detail , especially important for engaging travel images . It comes down to the amount of space where the pixels can be placed , essentially a cameras sensor is where the image information is captured , similar to a piece of film for those that still shoot on celluloid .
The sensor determines how much light it needs to create an image , the larger the sensor the more information it can fit , a full frame digital camera has a sensor that is comparable to 35mm film , everything below this is smaller .
Once the cameras sensor , through the photosites , has captured the light and colour information it transforms the information into pixels which create the image . However , a large pixel count on a small sensor means that the photosites are smaller and prone to drop detail , especially in low light conditions or shadow areas . And yet it goes deeper than that with areas such as lens crop , depth of field et al , and of course a large sensor means a larger camera . It ’ s an area that could be discussed in great detail .
Whilst all cameras work well at capturing the moment , great images come with thought and pre-planning , and
